Here we have a typical automotive doorjamb. Note the black rubber gaskets that outline the door cavity. These
gaskets are what seals the door opening when you close the door. Over time, they can wear out and become
brittle or soft, or they can tear, and when water is allowed to seep in between the door and the gasket, they
can allow the door to freeze shut. Then, when you force the door open, the gasket tears even more, allowing
more water to get inside the door cavity. Lubricating these gaskets with a silicone lubricant semi-annually will
keep them supple and flexible and will help them continue sealing water and air out of the vehicle. Also, over
time, the striker often goes out of adjustment, causing the door not to close securely. When a loose-fitting
door is evident, have the striker adjusted so that the door pulls tighter into the door cavity.
Damage to Exterior of Car
Keep the exterior and undercarriage of your car washed clean of road salt
weekly during high salting times. Remember, salt plus water plus metal equals
