KAMADO A-GO-GO!
Get it all in your grill with the latest addition to Weber’s sizeable
BBQ arsenal, the fabulous and versatile Summit Kamado
Contrary to what you might be thinking,
a kamado is not a type of scary lizard
- although it can belch fire and is
probably not the greatest news for your
livestock. No, a kamado is a type of
outdoor cooking apparatus – the term
‘charcoal barbecue’ seems reductive
here – that could revolutionise your al
fresco cooking this summer. Which is
actually not that far away, despite what
a peek out of your window right now
might suggest.
Probably the best known kamado grill/
oven is the Green Egg and its many
imitators. These monsters resemble
eggs from Alien, although something
much more pleasant usually comes out
of them. Weber’s new kamado on the
block, however, looks a lot more like a
traditional kettle barbecue, albeit a rather
large one that’s been built to some sort
of military specification.
The World’s Number One Barbecue
Brand® aims to take the kamado ‘into the
future’ – and into more UK homes – with
the Summit (£999, weber.com). But what
is so special about these seriously
sizeable BBQs?
In a word: versatility. And in some
other words: precision, consistency and
ruthless efficiency. The Summit Kamado
comes up to temperature at speed, and
offers a tightly controlled temperature
range that means you can do everything
from red-hot searing to low-’n’-slow
smoking. Just fire up your charcoal and
get grilling on the humongous, 24-inch
cooking area.
With our gardens more important than
ever this year, people will want to get out
there earlier and make more of their
outdoor spaces. The Kamado Summit
makes the ideal centrepiece, taking your
hob and oven outdoors. Its controllability
and fuel-efficiency – kamados use way
less charcoal than traditional BBQs –
mean it can be used even by beginners,
but its versatility means more adventurous
grillers will never run of new things to try.
There’s even a top-end model that
features gas ignition, so you don’t have
to dick about with lighter fuel and bits
of burning newspaper.
Built to last for decades, the Summit
Kamado is also easy to clean and easy to
manoeuvre thanks to heavy duty casters.
The stakes have never been higher than in
2021, and with a beast like this in your
yard, the steaks (or vegan equivalent) have
never been better.
