Energyinfrastructurealso offersgener-

ous yieldin an otherwiseimpecuniousincome

environment.The sectorcarriesa6.5% divi-

dendyield,substantiallyhigherthaneven

high-yieldbonds.Historyhas shownthat

energy’sdividendsaccountfor morethan

three-quartersof the sector’stotal return.

Admittedly,the sector’sprice performance

has flatlinedfor the past five years.The Ale-

rian EnergyInfrastructureIndexlost more

than 30%ofits valuelast year.Year to date,

however,the indexhas bouncedup 12%.

Masterlimitedpartnerships,constituting

half of the sector,tend to ebb and flow with

crudeprices.Unlessinvestorsbelievethat

priciercrudeis temporary,MLPs are trad-

ing about20%belowwhere$60-a-barrel

crudewouldsuggest.Evenapartialconver-

gencewould implyadouble-digitpricegain,

accordingto Cresset’s analysis.

Feb.16:WhenJanet Yellen was chairof the

Federal ReserveandMarioDraghiwas

presidentofthe EuropeanCentralBank,

theyrepeatedlypointedout the limitsof

monetarypolicy,and urgedfiscalauthorities

to do theirpartto supportthe economy.

Remarkably, both former central bankers

are now in governmentleadershippositions

withtheirhandson the pursestrings.With

the dovesin charge,governmentspending

mayno longerbe on the sidelines.

Yellen,nowTreasurysecretaryin the

new Bidenadministration,said the U.S. was

still in adeep jobsrecession.Thiswould

lead to long-termeconomicscarringwithout

further fiscal stimulus, she added, and

shouldoverrideconcernsaboutinflation.

The Bidenstimuluspackage,worth$1.9 tril-

lion in its currentform,lookslikelyto be

passed via the “reconciliation” process.

Draghi looks set to become Italy’s new

primeminister,leadinganationalunitygov-

ernment,and his taskwill be to implement

reformsthat will enablethe countryto

spendits 200 billioneuroshareof the Euro-

pean Union’s coronavirusrecoveryfund.

Broad, vocal support for Draghi—not only

within Italy but also from Germany—

indicateshowfar Europe’sconsensushas

swung in favor of fiscal intervention....

Shouldthe plannedfiscalinterventions

come to pass,theycould supercharge a

vaccine-drivenrecoveryin economicactivity

and consumerspending....For the first time

in along while,marketsmay now havemore

Feb.12:Demandfor zinc is expectedto pick

up afterthe end of the ChineseNewYear,

andasfar as we can tell at AOTH, it can

only grow stronger.

Like copper,zinc is an importantmetal

forcivil infrastructurerenewal.President

Bidenis alreadyplanningwhatwe thinkwill

be amajor infrastructurespendingpackage,

aimedat the country’scrumblingfreeways,

bridges, airports, and water systems.

Recently,Bidenreportedlymet withfour

senators from both sidesofthe aisleto

discussapotentialinfrastructureprogram,

warningthat if the U.S. doesn’t addressthe

problem,Chinais “goingto eat our lunch.”

Beyondthe U.S.,thereis China’sBelt

and RoadInitiative,or BRI,consistingof a

vastnetworkof railways,pipelines,high-

ways,and portsthat extendswestthrough

the formerSovietrepublicsand southto

Pakistan,India,and SoutheastAsia.BRI

requires millions more metric tons of zinc,

along with other key infrastructure metals

such as copper, nickel, and aluminum.

In Europe,the EuropeanUnionwantsto

spendits way out of the pandemic,leading

witha“greenrecovery”pledgeworth€550

billion.Amongthe projectsthat couldbene-

fit fromthe fundsare low-carbonsteelpro-

ductionin Sweden(steelmakingrepresents

abouthalf of zinc consumption)and an

electric-vehiclebatteryfactoryin Poland.

The bullishcasefor zinc,then,is clearly

bolsteredby the greenand blacktopinfra-

structureprojectsthat haven’t evenbegun

to be rolledout.
