“In a normal transfer window, we would not look at Preston...

but since our situation got clearer and clearer – the problems

we had – when we saw him we got really excited”

Ben DAVIES

(Liverpool)

The 25-year-old centre-back’s move
from Preston North End to the Premier
League champions was one ofJanuary’s
most unexpected transfers, not least
because he had reportedly agreed to
join Celtic at the end of his contract this
summer.
The Reds’ defensive injury crisis saw
them seal a £1.6 million deal for the
Preston man – plus Ozan Kabak on
loan from Schalke – on the final day
of the transfer window.
Having spent his entire career in the
Football League, Davies will be ready
for all the physical tussles that the
Premier League can throw at him, yet
he is also extremely comfortable on
the ball. A natural left-footer, he has
regularly played full-back and could
offer cover for Andy Robertson too.
It will be the stuff of fairy tales if he
can seize his opportunity at one of the
world’s biggest clubs.

HERNAN CRESPO

won the first trophy of his managerial
