EVENTS & EXHIBITIONS

There are many online courses to look forward to
this spring, in particular those run by the Wallace
Collection, London. Look out for Drawing the
Figure: Gods Entwined on Saturday March 27,
11am to 4.30pm via Zoom. This one-day drawing
course, led by art lecturer and educator, Karly
Allen is suitable for all levels and explores the
human body in art. Participants will use paintings
and sculptures from the collection as inspiration
to experiment with speed and mark making
exercises. The afternoon session includes a
more sustained exercise to develop a two-figure
composition exploring tone and colour.
To coincide with Easter Week, Dr Richard Stemp’s

two-day course on March 30 and 31 (11am to
1pm), The Passion of Christ in Art, explores
paintings, sculpture, manuscripts, ivories and
jewellery in the collection that tell the story of
Christ’s Passion. He will be looking at ways each
was interpreted and its wider implications for art
and faith. Once again this is suitable for all levels.
Looking ahead, bookings are now being taken
for the gallery’s major conference, Rubens’ Great
Landscapes, on May 17 and 18, 2 to 5pm daily,
which focuses on two of Rubens’ landscapes –
A View of Het Steen in the Early Morning and The
Rainbow Landscape (below left).
