Scoliosis

My Personal Tips

Throughout my scoliosis journey, I have found ways to deal
with certain effects of scoliosis. Not everything that I am
listing may help as everyone's scoliosis is different and some
things may not work for you.

When choosing your back brace go for a more neutral color.
For me, as a very insecure person, a bright colored brace
wouldn't work, since it might bring more attention to the
brace. If your back brace hurts or is uncomfortable, make
sure you contact your doctor and get it adjusted. You will be
in the brace for quite some time, so for it to be comfortable
is very important. Another good advice is to ask for new
velcro straps or padding as if they don't fit well the brace
won't work as well. I don't like wearing my brace so I exercise
a lot more now, as you are allowed to take your brace off for
exercises. Core exercises are very important as
strengthening your core can also strengthen your spine. For
me, core exercises also help with posture and overall
comfort.

Because of scoliosis one of my shoulders is much higher
than the other. When I exercise or lie down for too long I get
shoulder pain or back pain. A helpful way to cope with this
pain is to grab a tennis ball and roll it over the tight muscles
in my shoulder and back. Overall the best personal advice I
can give is to stay positive and push through the treatments.
