Scoliosis

(laeticia) #1

A normal Spine has quite a few front-to-back curves
between the neck and the pelvis. Scoliosis, on the other
hand, is an S or C sideways curvature of the spine that is
10 degrees or more. An abnormal rotation in the vertebrae
may also be present when having scoliosis. Scoliosis can
occur at any age but it mostly occurs in children when going
through puberty. The primary age is between 10-15 years
old.

What is Scoliosis?

Types of Scoliosis

There are different types of scoliosis like Idiopathic scoliosis
which is the most common type of scoliosis that causes the
spine to develop an abnormal curve. Idiopathic scoliosis
has no definite cause. Another type is Congenital scoliosis
which is due to congenital birth defects in the spine and is
often associated with other structural abnormalities.
Neuromuscular scoliosis is due to loss of control of the
nerves or muscles that support the spine. The most
common causes of Neuromuscular scoliosis are cerebral
palsy and muscular dystrophy. Degenerative scoliosis is
typically caused by degeneration of the discs that separate
the vertebrae or arthritis in the joints that link them.
Osteoporosis-related scoliosis is caused by fractures. In
people with osteoporosis, the bones are vulnerable to
fracture, and the spine is a favored fracture site. If the spine
fractures one side of a vertebra (spine bone) compresses
more than the other side, the spine can curve as a result.
