Causes and symptoms

Causes

Doctors don't know what causes the most common type of
Scoliosis (Idiopathic scoliosis), it does appear to involve
hereditary factors because the disorder tends to run in
families. Less common types of Scoliosis may be caused by
conditions such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy,
birth defects, injuries, or infections of the spine. The
causes of adult scoliosis can be either as a curve that
occurred in their youth progresses or as a newly diagnosed
disorder that may result from degenerative spine changes
or osteoporosis.

Symptoms

Signs of scoliosis include uneven shoulders, one shoulder
blade that looks more prominent than the other, one hip
higher than the other, irregular waist, leaning to one side,
and ribs sticking out on one side. Symptoms of scoliosis in
adults are pain, bulge or deformity in the back, loss of
height, shortness of breath or quick fatigue, and premature
stomach sensation of fullness.
