Surgery
Younger kids may have an operation to insert special
rods alongside their spine, usually those under 10. This
will help avoid the curve from getting worse as the spine
develops. The rod would have to lengthen every few
months this can be achieved based on the type of rods
used:

  • a rod that would be stretched through a small incision
    in the back

  • a non-incision method by using a remote control that
would activate the magnets inside the rod to lengthen
    the rods.

Even if the child has surgery, the child may have to wear a
back brace to protect the spine. When the child stops
growing the rod can be removed and another operation
would be done to straighten their spine.
