Scoliosis

(laeticia) #1
The risk factors for developing the most common type of
scoliosis (Idiopathic scoliosis) include age, as symptoms
normally appear to develop during the growth spurt.
Gender, despite the fact that both girls and boys develop
mild scoliosis at the identical time, the threat of the curve
worsening is much higher for girls. Family history, scoliosis
can occur in families and can be passed down.

Risk factors and Diagnosis

Scoliosis is confirmed through a physical examination
where the patient has to stand, bend down, and lie down.
A device called a Scoliometer would be used during the
physical examination to see the degree to which a spine is
curved. The most conclusive diagnosis is an X-ray, an X-ray
would reveal exactly where a spine is curved and by how
much. A Cobb angle will be used to make accurate
measurements from the X-ray image. The Cobb angle
incorporates all the data that is given in an X-ray image to
measure the curves of the spine. Sometimes a CT or an
MRI scan is used to diagnose scoliosis.
