hen designer Jessie Zeigler of Threaded Quilting Studio released

her No Y Seam Feathered Star block pattern, I knew my friend’s

design was worthy of some treasured fabrics by designer Heather Ross

that I had in my stash. I started collecting Ross’s fabrics in 2005 at my

fi rst International Quilt Market in Houston. The charming sketches she

created from childhood memories just spoke to me.

Over the course of two years I created 13 Feathered Star blocks in

four sizes. Each block includes a fussy-cut center and carefully cut motifs

for some of the smaller pieces in the star points. Once I had sewn all the

blocks, I played around with settings. The layout I eventually chose was

a challenge to execute, involving several challenging Y seams, which was

ironic given the name (and purpose) of the block pattern. This quilt hangs

in my home offi ce, where it brings me joy every day.
