quilt on the American

Facebook page or on
Instagram using the hashtag

t’s time to start our annual quilt-
along! We introduced the American
Patchwork & Quilting® magazine quilt-
along in 2014 with the quilt Tone It Down
by designer Lissa Alexander. Since then,
we’ve added a Facebook group and an
Instagram hashtag (#apqquiltalong)
to provide support and show-and-tell
opportunities along the way. This year we
chose the quilt Nine-Patch Square Dance,
page  28, by Sherri McConnell, who used
the Happy Days collection she designed with her daughter, Chelsi, for Moda
Fabrics. Associate editor Diane Tomlinson combined fabrics of all kinds from her
stash make the Nine-Patch Square Dance color option, page 35. And I plan to use
19th-century reproduction prints to make my version. As we move through the
process, I’ll be posting my progress on my Instagram page (@sewmorequiltsmom).
In 2020 did you feel the loss of in-person quilting retreats as much as I did? To
facilitate a sense of community during the pandemic, our staff hosted a couple
of virtual quilting retreats on Facebook and Instagram. In How to Host a Virtual
Quilt Retreat, page 24, we share some of the insights we gained on how to stage a
successful online event.
Have you ever wanted to display your quilts outdoors but weren’t sure you
should? Ask the Editors, page 10, looks at the pros and cons of moving your quilts
outside. What quilting problem or challenge are you grappling with? Send it to Ask
the Editors at [email protected], and we’ll try to answer it in an upcoming
issue.
When you assemble Pineapple blocks, do you use foundation paper piecing or a
specialty ruler? Designer Anita Grossman Solomon has developed a technique that
uses Flying Geese-inspired units, squares, and triangles to make the recognizable
design, and she demonstrates her technique in her two-color quilt Sapphire,
page 36.
And fi nally, Sew & Tell, page 104, features Quilt Sampler® magazine editor Doris
Brunnette, who shares why a quilt she made with treasured fabrics brings her joy.
