medium, or dark print (print B), gather
one 2×18" strip, four 3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares, and
one 6^1 ⁄ 2 " square.

Use a pencil to mark a diagonal
line on wrong side of each print A
2" square.

Align marked print A squares
with opposite corners of a
print B 3^1 ⁄ 2 " square (Diagram 1; note
direction of marked lines). Sew on
marked lines. Trim seam allowances
to^1 ⁄ 4 ". Press open attached triangles.
Align marked print A squares with
remaining corners of print B square;
stitch, trim, and press as before to
make a Square-in-a-Square unit. The
unit should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 " square including
seam allowances. Repeat to make four
Square-in-a-Square units total.

Sew together print A 2×18" strip
and print B 2×18" strip to make a
strip set (Diagram 2). Cut strip set into
eight 2"-wide segments.

Sew 2"-wide segments to opposite
edges of a print A 3^1 ⁄ 2 " square to
make a side unit (Diagram 3). The unit
should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 × 61 ⁄ 2 " including seam
allowances. Repeat to make four side
units total.

Align a marked print A square
with one corner of print B 6^1 ⁄ 2 "
square (Diagram 4; note direction
of drawn line). Sew on marked line.
Trim seam allowances to^1 ⁄ 4 ". Press
open attached triangle. In same
manner, add remaining marked
print A squares to remaining corners
of print B square to make a center unit
(Diagram 5). The unit should be 6^1 ⁄ 2 "
square including seam allowances.

Referring to Diagram 6, lay
out Square-in-a-Square units,
side units, and center unit in three
rows. Sew together pieces in rows.
Join rows to make a block. The block
should be 12^1 ⁄ 2 " square including seam
allowances.

Repeat steps 1–7 to make 56
blocks total.

CUT FABRICS

Cut pieces in the following order.

From each light, medium, or dark
print, cut:
▫ 1—6^1 ⁄ 2 " square
▫ 8—3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
▫ 2—2×18" strips
▫ 20—2" squares

From blue print, cut:
▫ 10—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" binding strips

ASSEMBLE BLOCKS
Measurements include^1 ⁄ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no direction
is specified, press seam toward darker
fabric.
