CUT FABRICS

Cut pieces in the following order.
Designer Nancy Mahoney prefers
to make triangle-squares larger than
necessary and trim them to size.
To use this method, cut 4" and 2^1 ⁄ 2 "
squares instead of the 3^7 ⁄ 8 " and 2^3 ⁄ 8 "
squares listed in cutting instructions.

From assorted red prints, cut:
▫ 10—7^1 ⁄ 4 " squares, cutting each
diagonally twice in an X for
40 extra-large triangles total
▫ 24—4^1 ⁄ 4 " squares, cutting each
diagonally twice in an X for
96 medium triangles total
▫ 34—3^7 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 65—3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
▫ 8—3× 331 ⁄ 2 " strips for outer border
▫ 4—3" squares
▫ 48—2^5 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 52—2^3 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 104—2^3 ⁄ 8 " squares, cutting each
in half diagonally for 208 small
triangles total
▫ 104—2" squares

From assorted cream prints, cut:
▫ 3 4—7^1 ⁄ 4 " squares, cutting each
diagonally twice in an X for
136 extra-large triangles total
▫ 12—6^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
▫ 24—4^1 ⁄ 4 " squares, cutting each
diagonally twice in an X for
96 medium triangles total
▫ 66—3^7 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 4—3^7 ⁄ 8 " squares, cutting each in half
diagonally for 8 large triangles total
▫ 52—2× 31 ⁄ 2 " rectangles
▫ 52—2^3 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 52—2" squares

From red bubble print, cut:
▫ 8—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" binding strips

ASSEMBLE A BLOCKS

Measurements include^1 ⁄ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no direction
is specified, press seam toward darker
fabric.

(^1)
Use a pencil to mark a diagonal
line on wrong side of all assorted
red print 2" squares, all assorted
cream print 2^3 ⁄ 8 " squares, and 26
assorted cream print 3^7 ⁄ 8 " squares.
(^2)
Align a marked red print square
with one end of a cream print
2 × 31 ⁄ 2 " rectangle (Diagram 1; note
direction of marked line). Sew on
marked line. Trim seam allowance
to^1 ⁄ 4 ". Press open attached triangle.
Add a marked red print square to
opposite end of rectangle to make a
Flying Geese unit. The unit still should
be 2× 31 ⁄ 2 " including seam allowances.
Repeat to make 52 Flying Geese
units total.
(^3)
Referring to Diagram 2, lay out
four assorted cream print 2"
squares, four Flying Geese units, and
one red print 3^1 ⁄ 2 " square in three
rows. Sew together pieces in rows. Join
rows to make a center unit. The unit
should be 6^1 ⁄ 2 " square including seam
allowances. Repeat to make 13 center
units total.
FINISHED QUILT: 711 ⁄ 2 "^ square
FINISHED BLOCKS: 12" square
Yardages and cutting instructions are
based on 42" of usable fabric width.
To plan this quilt in a different
colorway, use the Coloring Diagram
on Pattern Sheet 2.
▫ 41 ⁄ 2 yards total assorted red prints
(blocks, inner and outer borders)
▫ 41 ⁄ 2 yards total assorted cream
prints (blocks, inner border)
▫ 2 ⁄ 3 yard red bubble print (binding)
▫ 41 ⁄ 2 yards backing fabric
▫ 80"-square batting
When choosing
fabrics for a scrap quilt,
include light, medium,
and dark fabrics in
each color and large-
and small-scale prints,
florals, dots, and stripes.
This will draw your
eye around the finished
project and make it more
interesting.
