MASTER TIP DOD PROCTER
The painting techniques of the world’s best artists
A simple compositional trick turns an elegant portrait into a true
masterpiece in Dod Procter’s The Golden Girl. Notice how the sweep of her
sitter’s arms form a fi gure of eight that centres on the chin. If you look at
any part of that exposed fl esh, your eyes are circulated around the picture
and naturally brought back to the bottom tip of the face – a focal point for
any portrait. Clever planning bears timeless results.
The Golden Girl features in Challenging Convention, which runs 27 March to 19 June
at Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle. http://www.laingartgallery.org.uk
