ecause I sketched for many years using
just pencil and ink, colour was always
a bit of a foreign language. Colour
intimidated me. When I bought my fi rst set of
watercolour paints, I was very hesitant and,
as a result, my washes were timid and pale.
I am much more confi dent now with colour,
and much bolder with colour choices. But I
certainly understand how colour can be
confusing. One solution is purposefully limiting
your colour palette.
Limiting yourself to just six colours can feel
like an impossible challenge. Even my smallest
travel palette has nine colours, but I’ve found
these are the colours I reach for most often:
Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Pyrrol Scarlet,
Raw Sienna, Quinacridone Red and Phthalo
Green [see right].
