Every tube of paint has within it
more than just a hue; it has tinting
strength, it has its saturation, and
it has transparency or opacity.
These different qualities are how
I choose my colours.
I paint with long flat brushes.
I would probably struggle to work
with any other kind of brushes
now. The length of them gives a
certain kind of mark, which I like

  • it has a calligraphic quality.
I prefer new brushes, as they
have a springiness but also a
    sharpness. That sharp edge
means I can get small marks out
of a big brush and also still have
    accuracy when I’m making big
marks. The worst brushes for me
    are filberts, they create rounded,
    soft smudgy edges. You can’t
make a definite mark with them...
    Well, I can’t! I want something with
which I can be quite specific, hard
    and dynamic.
