He came up with important values in baseball such as BA(batting
average), ERA(earned run average) and RBI(runned bases in). Since he
was a fan of cricket, he used the scorecard format of cricket to calculate
those values. The BA was previously being recorded as hits per game, but
after Chadwick received a letter from his reader saying that it gives huge
advantage to battery number one, he modified it to hits per at-bat.​^7
Chadwick’s box scores and detailed game descriptions helped Americans
follow the sport from home. For the first time, baseball fans could
compare the statistics of one player to another and form their own
opinions without having to travel to the ballpark.^


The boxscore method was not the only accomplishment. As a
chairperson of the baseball playing rules committee, Chadwick formed
various concepts commonly used in modern baseball. He was the one
who gave numbers 1 to 9 to each position and reported errors separately
