his small desk at the cannery, the revolution of sabermetrics began.^7

Bill James, being a great fan of the Kansas City Royals, loved baseball and
baseball statistics. He enjoyed recording the Royals’ games on a sheet of
paper, but one day realizes that there are only very basic indicators such
as BA and ERA. James begins to study and investigate to view baseball in
a more objective viewpoint. After years of his discovery and
investigations. In 1977, he published a book called “1977 Baseball
Abstract”. This book was full of in-depth statistics compiled from
James's study of box scores and unique insights. He copied and stapled
every copy himself but unfortunately, only 75 people purchased the
booklet. Despite the low purchases, he annually published a series of
baseball abstract with new observations.^9 His effort led the “Baseball
Abstract” to be gazetted and advertised in a famous sports magazine
called the “Sports Illustrated”, and soon his book caught popularity. ^7

These series of “Baseball Abstract'' took part in most of the early
achievements of sabermetrics. Some contexts included in the books
were Runs Created, Range Factor, Defensive Efficiency Rating, Win
Shares, and Pythagorean Win Percentage^9

Onwards, James has every year published a book and today, he is still
publishing a book series in the name of “Bill James Handbook” which
introduces scouting reports and his results of investigations that support
many sabermetricians around the world.
