Maths Inside Baseball

(qra1234) #1

literally indicates a hole or a tunnel between third baseman and
shortstop. The number 5.5 is the average of the position number of third
baseman(5) and shortstop(6). ^1

There is one more thing in baseball which is used like a formula in
mathematics. It is an abbreviation that expresses baseball terms in short
letters. A single is 1B, double is 2B, triple is 3B, home-run is HR, walk is
BB, hit by pitch is HBP, sacrifice fly is SF, fielder’s choice is FC. There
are plentiful abbreviations for every single term in a baseball game

// Multiples of Three makes Baseball

The number three is probably the most recognized and used number in
baseball. 3 in mathematics is the third positive integer between 2 and 4, it
is the first odd prime number, or it is the second triangular number.

Number three appears a lot of times in baseball, either in its multiples or
itself. First of all, 30 teams in MLB played 162 games each, 81 away and
81 at home. The 2020 season also had 60 games with 30 away and 30
home games. Teams usually play 3 consecutive matches each series but
they sometimes have 4 consecutive matches. This is because they have to
play 19 (3+3+3+3+3+4), 7 (3+4), or 4 (4) matches with specific teams in
their division, league, and interleague.^2

In the rules, there are 9 position numbers for 9 positions and 9 batters
form a line-up. Each batter gets 3 strikes to make a hit, or else they are
struck out. 3 outs makes up an inning, and 9 innings make up a game. Up
to 9 extra innings can be played when the game is tied by bottom 9th.
