Ibelieveanychildthathasgrown
uplovingthebeachesofCornwall
isa beachcomberatheart.For
some,it’sa serioushobby(think
earlymorningstartsandmetal
detectors)butforothers,likeme,
it’sa methodofrelaxation.It takes
mebacktoa childhoodspentsifting
throughsandforhiddentreasures,
mydadcroucheddownnexttome
helpingtoidentifythethingsI’d
found.Nowasa grownwoman,my
windowsillsarefilledwitha curated
collectionoffavouritefinds.
Thebesttimetobeachcombis
aftera bigstorm.Somanywonderful
thingswashupontheshoresand
thesandgetschurnedup,sothey’re
mucheasiertospot.I’veevenfound
somebitsofbottlesthatdateback
to Victorian and Georgian times,

mostlikelyfromshipwrecks,after
roughweather.Inthesummer
months,thebeachesoftheIslesof
Scillyaremyfavouritestoexplore.
I’vefoundsomeveryprettysea
glassesthere.Kynanceis oneof
Cornwall’smostmysticalbeaches
andis extremelypopularwith
touristsonsunnydays,butinwinter,
ittakesona differentpersonality
altogether.It hasa realwildness
aboutit – it’salmostotherworldly.
Myhusbandlovestobeachcomb
too,andoftenwe’llgotogether.We
liverightnexttotheoceansowe’re
fortunatethatwe’reabletovisitthe
beachona whim.Wewanderalong
chatting,occasionallydriftingoff
tolookforthingsontheshoreline.
Thesoundofthewavesmakesfor
a wonderful, meditative mood. In

fact,beachcombingis greatforboth
physicalandmentalwellbeing.If I’m
feelinga littlerundownorlethargic,
it’smoreoftenthannotremedied
bya doseoffreshseaair.It’ssuch
a wonderfulwaytoblowawaythe
cobwebsandescapethedailygrind.
Withday-to-daylifebusierthanever,
it’sneverbeensoimportantforus
alltoslowdown,recharge,andfully
appreciatethelittlejoysnature
hastooffer,andbeachcombing
encourages exactly that.
