ARC SALON COMPETITION
The Art Renewal Centre’s ARC Salon Competition is an international
competition for contemporary realism offering over $130,000 in
cash awards. This year, its 15th year, the competition received 4,
entries from 83 countries. T J Cunningham, a professional artist from
America won The Artist Award for his painting Near the Beaver Pond
(above). T J studied art with oil painter and illustrator, Brian Jekel at
Pensacola Christian College, beginning his career as a professional
artist immediately after graduating in 2010.

Take a look at the fine art and craft courses on offer at this
year’s West Dean Summer School, held from July 30 to
August 19. Nestled in the beautiful south downs, the venue
offers plenty of opportunities to paint outside with early
evening drawing sessions held each day in the gardens.
Painting courses include Painting – Colour Palette and Stuff
of Place with Frances Hatch, a Comprensive Oil Painting
Course with John T Freeman, Printmaking with Lino with Dale
Devereux Barker, Watercolour – the Floral Extravaganza of

‘I painted Near the Beaver Pond in the pines behind my
childhood home,’ T J writes. ‘A northeaster had begun the
previous evening and the woods were deep with fresh
snow. Painting there was a magical experience in many
ways but the thing that I remember most was the silence.
There’s nothing like the hush caused by a snowstorm.’
