W

e are celebrating a signifi cant milestone in The Artist’s long and proud history this
year as it is 90 years since the launch of our fi rst issue in March 1931. To celebrate,
we are inviting readers to join in our series of monthly challenges, hosted on our
website at http://www.painters-online.co.uk, based on some of the key events that took
place during 1931. See page 7 for full details and how to enter.
We are also excited to see the online entries coming in to our annual TALP Open Competition
(see opposite page and pages 14–15 for more details and how to enter). After such a diffi cult
year, it’s the ideal opportunity to share your work, broaden your exposure to our worldwide
community and win one of over 35 prizes worth over £13,500, including The Artist Purchase
Prize worth up to £3,000, representation for a year by BritishContemporary.art, the online gallery
featuring the best of British artists, and to exhibit in the popular gallery at Patchings Art Centre
from July 2021.
Two of our panel of judges, David Curtis ROI, VPRSMA and Adebanji Alade VPROI and BBC One
Show presenter and art coach, are leading British fi gurative artists, each with their individual
perspectives and opinions. I asked them for their thoughts about what they will be looking for
amongst the entries.
David says, ‘I am expecting to view works refl ecting these unprecedented times. These may
cover very localised subjects painted during our months of restricted movement.’ As he notes,
social restrictions and distancing have meant a time of enforced contemplation for many artists,
during which ‘we have been able to channel our creative energies to enhanced eff ect.’ David
hopes to see works refl ecting how artists have used their time wisely, ‘to hone their drawing
skills and maybe to experiment with other than their preferred medium. Working beyond
our accepted visual boundaries can, now and then, yield surprising surges of creativity.’ He
anticipates seeing many small cameos of garden subjects, still lifes and portrait studies, but
whatever the subject matter, he will, he says, be looking for ‘assured and confi dent drawing
ability, a competent level of skill in painting technique, compositional value and works of original
concept in The Artist category entries in particular.’
Adebanji will be looking for works that ‘portray the ordinary in an extraordinary way.’ He
explains: ‘The way the work is composed to reveal the main theme is essential, with brilliant
draughtsmanship and exciting colour and value. I’m looking to see how artists can put a new
twist and a new light on things we’ve seen before or probably haven’t seen. This means they
must be truthful to their own interpretations and not be afraid of expressing themselves in their
most unique way.’ As he concludes, ‘Now get on with your entries and let those strokes begin to
fl ow!’

The closing date for entries is April 15, 2021. Enter online at http://www.talp.co.uk
