pathwalkledtoanunexpectedpurchase.
‘Itwasa simplehandpaintedsignthatread
“barnforsale”,’saysPoppy.‘Whenwetracked
downthefarmerownerandarrangedto
meet,it turnedouttobehistractorshed.’
Infact,thelastthingthecouplehadbeen
lookingforwasa project.‘Wewanteda house
thatdidn’treallyneedworktobedoneonit,
butthiswasjusttoogoodtoturndown,’says
Poppy.Luckily,helpwasathand.Herfather
trainedasa surveyorandbuilderandusedto
specialiseinbarnconversions, so he got right
behindtherenovation.

explainsPoppy.‘Weputina lotofworkand
investmentovera periodofabouta year,but
hewasveryunderstandingandwetrusted
himnottoselltoanyoneelse.’Oneofthe
bigdrawswasthelocation– a peacefuland
beautifulspotclosetothebeach.Andfrom
thestart,thepaircouldseewhatthistractor
shedcouldbecome.‘Atthatfirstviewing,we
walkedaroundsaying“bedroomshere,the
bathroomthere...”,’saysPoppy.‘I’vestillgot
someofoursketchesfromthattime and it’s
prettymuchhowit turnedout.’
Thecoupleworkedonthedesigntogether
withPoppy’sfatheradvising.‘Weweren’t
allowedtoknockdownanywallsand,in
manyways,thoseconstraintswerea blessing.
Ifwe’dhadcarteblanchewewouldhave
neededanarchitectbut,instead,wecouldjust
focusongettingthebestfromtheavailable
space,’shesays.Theyfoundinspirationon
websitesincludingPinterest,andfrom
architectssuchasRuralDesignwhobuild
withindustrialelementsintheScottishIsles.
