Thebuild,whichtook 18 months,
wasnotwithoutitsdifficulties.‘At
thetime,wewerelivinginmilitary
quartersinLondon,whichmeantwe
spentalmosteveryweekenddriving
downtoDevontoseewhatprogress
wasbeingmade,’saysJane.When
Mark ’sfinalmilitarypostingcameto
anend,thecouplehadnochoicebut
tomoveintotheunfinishedhouse.
‘Itwasa bitlikecamping,’saysJane.
‘Thewindowswerestillcoveredwith
protectivefilm,sothebuildersmade
someholesinit sowecouldseeout!’
Finally,however,thecontractors
departed,andthecouplewereleftto
gettoknowtheirnewhome– and
begintoputtheirstamponit.‘I’m
gladwewaiteduntilwestartedtolive
hereproperlytobuyfurniture,’says
Jane.‘Itmadeit somucheasierto
envisagewhatwouldlookright.’
Inthefiveyearssincemovingin,
thecouplehavechosencontemporary
piecesthatcombinewithmuch-loved
inheriteditemstocreatea homethat
isasindividualandwelcomingasit is
striking.‘I hopewe’veachievedwhat
myparentsdid– thatis,makea home
thatwillbea memorableandhappy
placeforourfamily,’saysJane.‘That
alone has made it all worthwhile.’
