fascinated by the house’s history. Upstairs, her children found two
pieces of writing on the wall, which Annabel has preserved under
glass. One from 1794 reads: ‘We come up here with candles but do
not need them a bit’. Another reads: ‘G and R Parkinson, 1914’.
Back in the 21st century, Annabel wanted to add a large family
kitchen suitable for entertaining and her starting point was a set
of reclaimed pine shutters, now painted pale cream. ‘The shutters
determined the size of the window and therefore the feel of the
room,’ she explains. And, by extending out into the garden, she was
able to create a double-height space.
At this point, Annabel called on her friend, interior designer
Rachel Hamel Cooke to help her create a smooth flow between
