Around the campfire

It was with great interest
that we read your editorials
in the May and June
magazines about the
benefits for children who
are introduced to camping
and outdoor activities at a
young age.
My brother and I, and
our friends, grew up in
Bergvliet when it was first
developed, and we spent
many happy hours camping
in the nearby forests and
on the Cape Peninsula’s
mountains in the 50s and
60s (we were allowed to in
those days).
We then also introduced
our three children to
caravanning, camping and
hiking at very young ages.
Our 1983 Jurgens
Magnificent was ‘retired’
to the farm Driehoek in
the Cederberg in 1990, and
our families still enjoy our
lovely private campsite on
the farm.
Fortunately for us all,
our children and their

respective
spouses have
now passed
on their
great love
of the outdoors to our six
grandchildren, who don’t
need any encouragement to
get away somewhere.
My youngest son and his
family have since emigrated
to Cornwall in the UK,
where they still enjoy
walking the many beautiful
trails and beaches.
Earlier this year we
camped with our very
happy grandchildren and
newfound friends at the
Karoo National Park. The
park is yet another great
place for young children to
roam and cycle freely in the
large fenced camp area.
Thank you for a
wonderful magazine. We
always look forward to
receiving and reading it
from cover to cover.
