The Canyon Roadhouse
campsite, all ten sites,
is up there with the best
in Namibia.
The sites are on the bank
of a dry riverbed, and most
have good shade under the
riverine acacias.
The large stone-paved
site near our ablution block
was very popular. Although
there is no shade, it has easy
access to the showers and
bathroom and, of course, the
large paved area.
I liked Number 4 where
we camped, under a couple
of huge acacias. Previously,

We filled up with fuel at the
Canyon Roadhouse and
set out for Aus, taking the
D601 before reaching the
T-junction and turning left
heading north on to the C12.
This C12 eventually reaches
the tar B4 that connects
Keetmanshoop and Lüderitz.
But it was only a short
distance along the C12 before
Jannie pulled over after
crossing a dry riverbed - the
!Gab River.
On our left at the crossing
was a lovely red train bridge.
Getting out, Jannie took us
over two solitary graves.
The graves are of two young
German Schutztruppe who
died in this lonely spot next to
the dry river.
Robert Leitz, born
December 1985 and died in
June 2006 was only 21 years
old. In the adjoining grave
lies L.Lichte born December

  1. He must have been 27.

One can only wonder
what happened to these two
unfortunate souls.
Not far from the old steel
bridge are the remains of the
Holoog Station. All that is left
is the neat stone base of the
water tower.
At the T-junction at the
main B4 tar road joining
Keetmanshoop, Aus and the
sea port of Lüderitz we took
a short detour via a small
gravel road to the left marked
Seeheim Hotel.
The hostelry had burnt
down in a recent fire, but
