Whata bakkie!Withinterior
comforttorivalluxurysedans,
thetritonstilldeliverswhenthe
goinggetstough,whethertowing
inthicksandsorgettingupa
rockymountainslope.
Duringourdesertsafari,I usually
droveatthebackoftheconvoy.
Someoftheminorgravelroads
weresocorrugatedtheylookedlike
a bodybuilder’swashboard
absstretchingallthewaytoangola.
Ourpowerfulradiosconstantly
crackled:“...Stayinthemiddle...
keeptotheleft,it seemsbetter
there...bloodyhell,myfalseteeth
arecomingout...howyoudoingat
thebackthererichard?”
My teeth were firmly in place,I
kepta constantlineandthetriton
justsoakedupthecorrugations
liketheydidn’texist.
thenew,tough-lookingtriton
isalsoa head-turner.Whetherat
campsites,filling up with dieselor
photographingattheFishriver
Canyon,I gota lotof:“Hey,doyou
mindif I takea look?”
this square, angular, newly-
designed front end, what Mitsubishi
calls the ‘Dynamic Shield’ design,
drewadmiringglanceswherever
wewent.
the interior, my home for
hour after hour on the road, was
equally impressive. I liked the
extremely comfortable, almost
cocoon-like,wraparoundfeeling
oftheleatherseats.
theseven-inchtouchscreen
infotainmentsystemwithandroid
and iPhone connectivity is perfect
forhandlingyourmediaonsuch
longroadtrips.
Butthetriton is not just about
gooddesign,it’sgotwhatit needs
undertheskintoo.Underthebonnet
isthewell-proven2.4MIveC DOHC
turbo-diesel engine that putsout
a hefty133kWat3 500rpmand
430Nmoftorqueat 2500 rpm.the
triton also comes out with a new
six-speed automatic gearbox.
I could go on and feed you
the numbers: ground clearance,
approach and departure angles,
etc. but I’d rather just tell you that
these guys have designed a vehicle
thatI grewtolove.
