Caravan

My new caravan: 2007 Scout

Trevor Meijboom has been a reader
of Caravan & Outdoor Life for 14
years... but he's never owned a caravan!
Then, after 20 years of camping
and having been rained out the last five
times, he decided it's time to buy one.
Now he is the proud owner of a Scout.

What type and model caravan
did you purchase?
We bought a second-hand Scout 2007.

What made you choose this
particular caravan?
We have always camped in tents – we
have a trailer that is geared up and we
just have to take food and clothes, so
camping is really easy.
After being rained out the last
five times (when Monday comes
and you are glad to be at work, we
realised it was time to come up with
a plan), we decided we wanted the
same easy setup, small and simple.
Basically somewhere dry to sleep.

What is your caravanning
background?
I only camped when I was a child,
but my wife grew up caravanning.

Goodbye tent, hello caravan!

What has been your most
memorable caravanning
experience?
We're still creating new experiences,
but I think as a kid I went with
friends on a caravan rally weekend –
I remember coming home exhausted
from all the fun and games.

What’s caravanning about
for you?
For me it is the whole family thing
of getting away – when it's 4pm and all
the braais are starting and all the kids
from the campsite are chasing each
other on bikes.
There is so much to keep you busy at
a resort, or you can choose to relax and
do nothing.

WithyourneW caravan?
We have only been to two places:
Klipdraai and Monateng. For Easter
weekend we are off to Olifants
River Lodge.
When my confidence grows
with towing, I would like to do a proper
long road trip to go explore and camp
along the Garden Route.

hoW has your caravan
benefited you?

have you done?
This is our first caravan, so nothing
specific yet. We've only been on
two caravanning trips with it, so we
still need to find out what extras we
might need.

Whatluxuryitemcan’tyoudo
Without in your caravan?
Don’t laugh... an air fryer!

What are your pet hates about
caravan parks?
Noiseafter11pm.

WhatadviceWould you give
first time caravanners or
people looking to buy a
caravan?
Just get one that suits you and your
family and your needs... we just wanted
a place to stay/sleep dry but still wanted
to do the living outside.
