A
fewmonthsagoI sawa series
of paintingsbyBobDylanin a

turnsoutthatI’mnota bigfanof Dylan

outlineof a ladypaintedwiththick,rough
brushstrokes.It’sanunflatteringpicture,

pricedat over£2,500each.
Lookingat thedisplaymademea bit

thinkabouthowartis valued,andhow
muchof it is todowithsupplyand

mademethinkaboutallthetalented

representation.Dylanis a superb
singer-songwriter– oneof thebest– but
shouldn’thehavetostartat thebeginning

In recentyearsthenumberof models,
actorsandmusiciansdescribing
themselvesasphotographersseemsto

obviousexamplesis BrooklynBeckham
who,despitequestionabletalent,shota

TheGuardian(who,incidentally,likes
Dylan’spaintings)wrote,‘thesepictures

say.’It’sthefinalpartof thesentencethat

thinkthesonof VictoriaandDavidcan
handlethecriticism.
Andthen,ofcourse,therewas
Bekham’sphotographybook,WhatI See.
NowI’mnotgoingtoaddfueltothefire
byoffering a full critique here – all I’ll say
is Beckhamshootswitha Leicaandhas

thatcreatesgreatpictures.Again,it’sa
caseofsupplyanddemand.Penguin

prettyirrelevant.Tobefair,if youthink

it’sa hardersell,butI wouldlovetosee
