In 1973,asa 13-year-oldpupil,I

wasintroducedtophotographyat my

secondaryschoolbytheartteacher

BrianParkhurst.Thatwasthestartof

my46-yearpassionforphotography,

whichgrewintoa career,anda

46-yearfriendshipwiththatteacher.

Thisyearon 10 May,Brianlost

hisbattlewithcancerleavingmany

formerstudents,photographerswho

benefitedfromhisknowledgeand

teaching,andfriendsandfamily

heartbroken.Brianwasa pioneerwith

regardtoteachingphotographyin the

early1970sat a secondaryschool,

wherehehadtofightforeverypenny

neededtoteachphotographyandset

upa darkroom.Myschoolat thattime

wasa collectionofkidswhofailed

their11+andwereneitherbright

enoughforhighschoolorgrammar

school.I believethatbecauseof

hisdrive,we(CharterSecondary

ComprehensiveSchoolin Barnsley,

SouthYorks)wereoneofthefirst

schoolsin thecountrytohave

O-levelphotographyexams.

Hispassioncontinuedthroughout

hislife– heworkedasanarchivistfor

Penistone history and camera clubs as

wellasWentworthCastle.Hisown

fascinationwasrecordinglocalvillage

andfolkinterestaswellaspursuing

infraredphotography.Hewasan

incrediblytalentedphotographerbut

hatedanykindof fussandavoided

praise,preferringhisstudentstotake

thekudos.Hewasandis myheroand

guruwhowouldnotallowanyoneto

becomebiggerthantheirwork,and

alwayshada jokeor(terrible)pun

readytoputa smileonyourface.
