Moving with a subject

To capture birds in flight I set my shutter speed
between 1/10 and 1/5sec and manually focus
on the bird’s eye using a 300mm zoom lens.
Shooting against the dark background of
the river or vegetation helps to bring out the
ghostly white balletic shapes of the bird’s
motion in flight.

Pausing
during the
exposure
This can enable
you to get a part
of the image
to ‘stick’. In this
image of my son,
Fynn, in Salisbury
Cathedral I have
paused on his
shoulders during
a vertical pan to
attempt to pull
them upwards to
create an angelic
winged form.
The end result
is majestic.

Layering ICM and
static subjects
Using an ICM base layer taken by shivering
the camera to create soft lines, I have layered
static images of anemone flowers taken
looking down on the woodland floor. The light
flowers can be lifted using a colour selection or
a layer-blending mode in your editing software.
