18 Martha Berland Breast Cancer
Martha Berland was still a stunning beauty in her new crop of bristle
short hair; some white, some black, some gray. Her husband brought her
from Israel on this “last chance” venture. She was on morphine, already a
sure sign that doctors had abandoned hope. And so had she. She believed she
was dying. And whenever he raised hope or spoke optimistically, she fought
back.
Yet her blood test results, as is plain to see, were quite good—her body
was still functioning well and she had every chance to recover.
