25 Robert Marcoux Hodgkins Disease
Robert Marcoux, in his early forties, came from French Canada with a
friend. He had been diagnosed in 1990 with Hodgkin’s disease. In spite of
regular clinical treatment at home, the lymph nodes of his abdomen were
getting bigger again. He was now having night sweats. [This is caused by
Mycobacterium avium , brought in by Ascaris.] He was losing weight. His
appetite was poor. He was extremely fatigued. There was constant pain and
pressure in the groin area.
His last CT scan was done in February, so we immediately ordered a
new one. This one, done May 7, showed a large tumor in the abdomen be-
tween the kidneys, measuring 6.7 x 4.5 cm, about the size of a potato. The
scan also showed considerable ascites (water seepage and accumulation)
around the kidneys. The radiologist noted that the liver texture was quite
poor, on the verge of developing tumors there.
They were nervous and frightened, unable to comprehend a word of
Spanish. Yet they had to stay in a Mexican motel, because, although an envi-
ronmentally safe one had just been opened, it was already full. They could
only stay for three weeks, giving us a rather impossible task. We reasoned
