52 Katherine Morales (continuation) Bone Cancer

It was three years since we had last seen Katherine Morales. Her story
begins at the start of this chapter. We begged her to visit us. Finally, she
agreed. It was April 3. Katherine walked in rather breezily for an earlier
bone-cancer case. She had no cane or walker, and my impulse was to grab
her before she might fall. But her family seemed unconcerned. This was a
follow-up visit, solely for the
record. She was not ill in any
way. She was not on any
pain medication—and not in
pain. She had gained back 30
lb. and now weighed 110 to
112 lb. We had agreed to
meet at the clinic’s ma-
lonate-free restaurant. She
was eager to talk and get
updated on all developments.
There was no hint of devel-
oping mental impairment,
although she was eighty-five
now. She walked with ease;
in fact, she had fallen re-
cently at home without the
slightest injury—contrasting
with the frequent breaks she
used to endure in the past.
What was her secret? Was
she on a special supplement?
Eating something special?
Her answers were no and no
again.
She had agreed to a
follow-up bone scan even
though bone density does not
improve enough to show
decisively on an X-ray, after bone cancer clears up. I thought that surely a
little improvement in bone density would be visible, though.
Here are some of the questions I asked and answers I got.
Q. Are you on any supplements?
