PLACE MAT AND COASTER SET
Note The place mat and coaster are worked in stocking stitch with
moss stitch borders, with the picture worked in the intarsia
method. Before starting to knit, wind off an appropriate number of
smaller balls of yarn. Most colours only need a small amount of
yarn, so yarn bobbins can be useful to stop tangles. As well as the
main ball, you will need three bobbins for Yarn A, five for Yarn B,
four for Yarn C and one for each of Yarns D, E, F and G. A crochet
cast-on is used as it mirrors a cable-cast off, but is optional.

STEP-BY-STEP CROCHET CAST ON
1 Make a slip knot on a crochet
hook. Hold the knitting needle
in your left hand and the hook in
your right. Tension the yarn in
your left hand.
2 Keeping hold of the yarn tail,
take the hook over the needle
and underneath the working
yarn. Catch the yarn on the
hook and draw it through the
slip knot. Manoeuvre your index
finger so the working yarn is
now behind the needle again.
Catch the working yarn once
more and draw through the
stitch on the hook.
3 Repeat Step 2 until you have
the stitches you need.
Wind off bobbins in Yarns A to G before
you start to knit your place mat. Most
colours only need a small amount of yarn
Like garter stitch, the moss stitch
border around the edge of your coaster
and place mat helps the fabric to lie flat
