p STAGE FIVE
A fairly stiff, warm mix of spectrum red, yellow ochre and zinc white was dry-
brushed into the mid-distant ground to break up the cooler areas of snow.
This colour also helped to introduce the colours of the distant hillside into the
foreground, giving a feeling of unity

p STAGE FOUR
I painted the large tree trunks and branches with two
slightly different mixes to give variety, one warmer and
lighter, the other cooler and slightly darker: ultramarine,
a touch of primary red, yellow ochre and zinc white

q FINISHED PAINTING
Snow near Grange, Cumbria, gouache, 91/2 3 103/4in (24 3 27cm).
Highlights were added to the distant fields and mid-distance foreground, the
near foreground was darkened and the sheep added. Finally, a few marks were
added to the foreground to add texture and interest

TIP
When dry brushing try not to disturb the
previously applied colour. A light touch is
essential. Practise on a scrap of paper before you
start on the painting.
