PRACTICAL

TA

p Snow Landscape 2, acrylic on canvas,
183 20in (45.5 3 51cm).
This was painted from a photo of a lovely
snow-capped tree with the warm glow of the
setting sun coming through the branches.
These types of images can be a bit chocolate-
boxy but hopefully through colour choices
and the way you decide to approach it,
you can take your painting away from the
predictable to being a bit different

scenes any time of year. If you can’t
get out, you could photograph a view
from your own window, maybe of your
garden, or persuade someone to go
out and take photos on your behalf –
friends are often happy and flattered to
share and give permission to their arty
friends to paint one of their photos.
Alternatively you could use a standard
‘green’ landscape and change the colour
scheme into a snow scene – or just
make it up! To stand out as an artist
you have to take risks. So whatever
subject you choose to paint, look out
for predictable formulas and try to do
something a bit more imaginative –
experiment and have fun!

EXERCISE
Make a colour
swatch of tints
To make your own colour
swatch, start with pure
colour and slowly add white
to the mix; move it along
to create a gradient of
tinted colour. Try this with
different colours and, when
you feel more confident,
create your own shades by
mixing a couple of colours
together.

You will need:
l Paper
l Acrylic paint – any colour
plus titanium white
l A brush
l Water
l Kitchen roll
