u FINISHED PAINTING
Winter Landscape, gouache on watercolour paper, 6 3 8in
(15 3 20.5cm).
All that remains is to use the rigger to add a skeletal winter tree and
we are done! Remember to try to complete this small painting in
around 30 minutes, which will stop you from overworking the piece
and won’t take up too much of your time

q STAGE TEN
Keep adding more colour into each stroke as you move up
into the darker top part of the main cloud. Here you can see
how I keep the paint wet in most areas but I wanted an edge
under this cloud, so I let the underlying wash dry before
commencing

q STAGE NINE
With a slightly stronger mix of Indian yellow and cadmium red light,
start to strengthen the warmer parts of the sky and also work some
of the colour up into the base of the main cloud

q STAGE EIGHT
Use a creamy mix of ultramarine, violet and burnt sienna to establish
the foreground area. We now have all the basic under washes in place,
so let all the paints dry before moving onto the next phase

p STAGE FIVE
Mix cobalt blue with cadmium red light
and a touch of violet to brush down into
the body of the cloud bank, to build up
the colour

u STAGE SIX
Add ultramarine and more
violet to the mix and brush in
the darkest area of the cloud,
keeping the wash wet so the
paint flows

u STAGE SEVEN
Turn the painting the right way up. With
the same blue/violet mix, carefully paint
in the low-lying clouds
