Very often at the end the painting needs a clean-up. In this instance it just involved rubbing out pencil
marks – always do this at the end as sometimes the rubbing out can aff ect the paper surface and
therefore any subsequent washes. Sometimes little spots of paint and smudges need to be lifted out

objects in shadows were gradually added.
