Cybersecurity has taken on greater
significance for Newmont in the
age of autonomous trucks and drills.
Canepari points out that, unlike securing
SAP or payroll data, safety is at stake.
“As CIO, I’m focused on how we ensure
the right controls in place to secure this
new technology, when just ten years
ago it wasn’t even on the agenda. We
need to provide true segmentation
across the network with innovation and
compartmentalization so we don't have
the entire company exposed at any
given time. A production system in Africa
needn’t be exposed to a risk that we may
have in Australia and so forth. We’re trying
to contain risk to smaller components and
manage it better.”
Canepari measures success more in
his team’s ability to respond rather than
their ability to prevent. “It’s not just about
firewalls,” he says. “We must develop
the ability to quickly identify the risk, any
breaches, and respond rapidly to them.
That’s the biggest change in culture that
I see from a cybersecurity perspective.
It’s about really focusing on the response
time, and the recovery is paramount.”
