The Canon Magazine 35

Raw HDR
You can now create Raw HDR
images in software, such as
Photoshop CC via Adobe Camera
Raw (ACR), or Lightroom. These all
give you amazing scope to lift detail
and reveal a very broad range of
tones hidden in your shots.

Auto Exposure
Bracketing

Learning to bracket
your exposure is
crucial for obtaining a
range of images with
detail in the shadows,
highlights and
midtones. Use your
Canon’s AEB (Auto
Exposure Bracketing),
and depending on the
difference in
brightness of your
scene, and DSLR,
set the bracketing
to +/- 2-stops to +/-
5-stops.

Open up your options
With your Raw HDR .dng you have
a huge range of tones to edit your
image and pull out all the shadow
and highlight details, without loss of
quality like what can happen with
JPEGs. Instead of +/- 5-stops of
Exposure, you can now move
the slider up the +/- 10-stops!

A digital negative

Don’t worry if your Raw HDR image
looks flat initially – it won’t transfer
any basic adjustments you may’ve
made to the three bracketed Raws.
From this window we set Deghost to
Medium, then you can save it as a
.dng (aka digital negative).

Edit with ACR
When using ACR, select your
three bracketed Raw images, then
right-click and select Merge to HDR.
It will then combine the three Raws
into one Raw image.
