SUNSET PHOTOS

04 THE RIGHT EXPOSURE
As you’re setting your shutter speed for a
good exposure, expose for the brighter sky
and sunset, as you can always boost a
slightly underexposed image and reveal
detail. But if you overexpose, there’s no
detail there to pull back in the skies.

05 LENS FILTERS
It can be tricky capturing balanced
exposures with bright skies and darker
elements in shadow or on land. You could
use an ND grad filter to hold back bright
skies, but these days I prefer to blend two
Raw exposures in Photoshop.

06 KEEP ON SHOOTING
Now experiment with your compositions.
I focused on the pier for my shot. The best
tip for sunset photos is to keep on shooting
before, during and after the sun has set to
capture the most colour in the sky. As it
gets darker, your exposures will get longer.

TOO BRIGHT GOOD EXPOSURE

Warm up your Raw

bring out the colours
in Photoshop by
setting a Shade
