Can I use a
Speedlite 550EX
with my EOS 80D,
or is it too old?
Patrick Needham, Essex

BRIAN SAYS... The
Speedlite 500EX may
have been introduced with
the EOS 3 film body, but
like all Canon EX-series
Speedlites it will work with
your 80D or any other
DSLR. Use the buttons on
the flash to change flash
settings – the flash
doesn’t support settings
from the camera menu.

Why do I hear
two shutters
when using flash
with Live View on
my EOS Rebel T7i
/ 800D?
Tony Chou, California

BRIAN SAYS... Yo u’re
hearing the mirror move
twice. Flash exposure is
measured by a sensor in
the pentamirror assembly
of your camera, and needs
the mirror down to work.
With Live View the camera
drops the mirror,
measures the flash then
raises the mirror to take
the photo.

What is the most
useful feature for
a vlogging
camera?
Ben Thomas, Kettering

BRIAN SAYS... I’d say
Dual Pixel AF will keep you
in focus and is invaluable if
you’re facing the camera.
For good audio you’ll need
a mic socket to plug-in an
external microphone.
A vari-angle LCD really
helps for self-shot pieces
and for getting interesting
low- and high-angle shots.

Are there any problems using the

W-E1 wireless card in the EOS 5DS R
for tethering in a studio?
Kate Cox, Tewksbury

BRIAN SAYS... If you’re used to tethering with a USB cable,
you’ll find the W-E1 card is much slower to transfer files,
especially the Raw files from the 50Mp EOS 5DSR. You’ll also
need to use the Canon EOS Utility software to manage the
Wi-Fi, as Capture One and Lightroom don’t support tethering
with the Wi-Fi connection. Using EOS Utility means you can
set the camera to RAW + JPEG and choose to only transfer
the JPEG to the computer, which speeds things up.
The W-E1 card has no storage, so you can only use the CF
card to store shots. This means you can’t have an in-camera
backup or shoot Raw on one card and JPEG on the other.

The W-E1 card adds Wi-Fi to the EOS 5DS, 5DS R and EOS 7D Mark II

What is the difference
between extension tubes

and extenders?
William Jones, Deeside

BRIAN SAYS... Increasing the
maximum magnification, by reducing
the minimum and maximum subject
distance. Extension tubes have no
glass elements inside.
Extenders multiply the focal length
of the lens, so a 2x extender increases
the focal length of a 200mm lens to
400mm. With a 2x extender you’ll lose
2-stops of light, so the aperture goes
from f/2.8 to f/5.6. Extenders have
optical elements inside them.

An extender multiplies lens’ focal length, an
extension tube increase max magnification

Why are images deleted from only a
single card, when using two cards in

b ack up mode on t he EO S 5D Mar k III?
Frank Carter, Cheshire

BRIAN SAYS... Cameras with two card slots can be set
to record different files to each, or to put a copy of the
same image on both cards. The other option is to
record to multiple, which puts a copy of each file on
both cards. When either of these functions are set, you
can choose which card
to playback from. Often
the fastest card or the
one with the smaller
files is chosen. Working
like this, the camera will
only delete an image
from the playback card.
Also if you use the rate
or protect functions,
these also only apply
to the selected
playback card.

How many batteries do
I need for a day long shoot

with the EOS R?
Susan Lambert, Truro

BRIAN SAYS... Canon says the
battery life is 370 shots, but I’ve found
this to be quite conservative. The
number varies based on how the
camera’s used – I’ve shot 550 pictures
on a single battery over three hours in
a studio with the camera connected to
my laptop over Wi-Fi. Recently I took
789 motocross photos and the battery
still shows 23%. One or two spare
batteries will be fine for most shoots.

cards in the camera, files are only
deleted from the playback card
