l

et’s exercise our creative
muscle by making ‘bad art.’
Don’t cringe, let me explain.
Your goal as an artist is to make
the best, most beautiful or
meaningful work you can. You
don’t want to mess it up and
make mistakes. I’m convinced
that a short warm-up making
‘bad art,’ will help you make
your GOOD art better.

If you enter this exercise giving
yourself permission to toss the whole
thing when you are done, all fear
of failure disappears. You are free
to explore and take risks that you
wouldn’t if you were trying to make
‘good art.’
‘Bad art’ exercises become vital
learning experiences when you spend
time analyzing the concept you just
explored. In this process you can gain
as much from a failure as a success
by simply spending a few minutes
analyzing your outcomes. I promise,
it’s the learning experience that is more
valuable than anything that happens
with the cloth.
I invite you to join other QUILTING
ARTS readers as we delve into a deeper
understanding of color theory in this
fi ve-part series. In each article, I will
introduce a color concept to explore
and work along with you as you
