Drawing Lessons

Almost everyone has had an art class or two—even if it was in
elementary school! Th e following drawing exercises may bring
back some memories and help you transfer your skills to the
sewing machine, where you will use the needle to ‘draw’ lines on
fabric rather than a pen or pencil onto paper.

Blind contour drawing

Look at a complex object (a person’s face, a hand mixer, a tennis
shoe). Notice especially the edges—or contours—of the object.

As you draw, keep your eyes focused only on the object and do
not look at your paper.
SLOWLY, try to match your eye movement along the contours of
the object with the movement of your pencil along the paper.

Continuous contour drawing
Th is is the same as blind contour as you focus on the subject
and try to match your eye and hand movements, however,
continuous contour can be done ‘blind’ or you can look at the
paper.
As your eye moves from one part of your object to another,
simply glide the pencil across the page and don’t lift it.

Th is method will give your drawing extra lines, and interesting
character. character.
