“In 2007, I entered QUILTING ARTS'
calendar competition, and while I
didn’t make the cut that year, my
entry, ‘The Bluest Eye,’ was named
a Judge’s Choice, and was featured
in the magazine. It was more than a
thrill—it was a validation that I was
an artist. I can’t tell you how much it
affected my sense of self, and my life’s
trajectory. That validation propelled
me to create, experiment, and aim
high,” said Susan, who went on to
win a place in several subsequent
calendars.
“QUILTING ARTS promoted so many
art quilters and gave us a platform
that wasn’t available anywhere else.
The magazine has introduced us to so
many techniques to try, and given us
affi rmation that we needed to leap to
the next stage,” she added.
Experiments with surface design
and mixed-media techniques have
always been a big part of QUILTING
ARTS. Fabric paint, soy wax batik,
screen printing, gelatin printing,
dyeing, foiling, making paper ‘fabric,’
photo imaging and fabric transfers,
digital design—readers have learned
about all these techniques and more
in QUILTING ARTS’ pages.
Artist Melanie Testa, who has
shared many innovative techniques
in the magazine and “Quilting
Arts Workshop” videos, said her
association with QUILTING ARTS
and Pokey Bolton has affected her
personally and professionally.
“After meeting at Quilt National,
Pokey asked me to submit my fi rst
book proposal. I got published!
I participated in ‘Quilting Arts
Workshops’ and Quilt Festivals, and
Make It University, where feathers,
pipe cleaners, glitter, and fun foam
came together with the passionate
play that became the hallmark of
events put on by the magazine,” said
Testa. “I have made deep friendships
through all of these happenings and I
have been able to solidify my standing
as an artist and internationally known
teacher. QUILTING ARTS, the people
I met through sharing my art in its
s

better!”
Refl ecting on the 20th anniversary,
Susan Brubaker Knapp said, “It’s
impossible to overestimate the
extraordinary infl uence that QUILTING
ARTS has had on the quilting
community. And it helped propel
art quilts into the world of art, and
not just quilting. It has encouraged
quilters to stretch, to dig deep into
their creativity, and fi nd their inner
artists. And after 20 years, it still
teaches, supports, and inspires.”
