Another new avenue is making marks
directly on the fabric—turning solids into
prints. “Marks In Black and Red” has a
playful aesthetic with new lines and shapes
inked directly onto the fabric before it
is quilted. Irene uses acid-free, archival,
permanent pens for the marks. The brush
tip allows her to vary the widths of her
lines and can be manipulated like a paint
brush, Irene explained.
Irene expects to keep learning as much
as she can about anything she can use in
her work—even from traditional quilting
techniques. She keeps an open mind and
looks for new possibilities every day. She
is at work on a new book on her signature
style, due out in the spring of 2022.
