“I’m very proud of her,” Carolyn
says of the piece.
Another way Carolyn keeps
her stash under control is by using
found fabrics. Her quilt “Tulips
in Moonlight” is made entirely of
repurposed denim. “I think we
quilters all need to think more
about the impact on our planet,”
she says, adding, “I’m not a leader
in that area, but I try my best.”
Carolyn, a certifi ed Texas Master
Gardener, retired in 2000 and
returned to her native Texas, where
she has participated regularly in
the activities of Dallas Area Fiber
Artists and SAQA. She relishes her
opportunities to keep learning,
experimenting, and dabbling. When
her grandchildren were young,
she’d help them ice dye T-shirts—
and then keep on dyeing her own
fabrics. She takes workshops
whenever she can. Lately, she’s been
in the mood to mess around with
her gel printing plate and see what
comes of that. And the iPad is never
far away.
So, if Carolyn, 85, always seems
to sound upbeat and happy, it’s no
doubt because she’s immersed in art
and is free to pursue it. As she says,
“When I feel like playing, I play.”
